Review: Kieran Trippier’s red card against Man City and Lucas Digne’s tackle as judged by Dermot Gallagher | Football news
Dermot Gallagher dissects flash points from weekend action in the Premier League.
Crystal Palace 3-1 Aston Villa
TROUBLE: Crystal Palace were awarded a penalty for Lucas Digne’s handball at the corner.
DETERMINED: Very harsh.
DERMOT SAYS: This is an incident that I’ve watched over and over again and thought, ‘How am I supposed to solve this?’. For me, giving a punishment for that is very harsh. It’s touch and go if it’s going to hit him in the head on the way down and if it does, it won’t be a penalty. If you look at it, the ball didn’t. VAR said his arm was shoulder height, in an unnatural position and it was pointing towards goal. Honestly I think if he didn’t intervene, no one would make a big deal out of it because no one wants to be punished. Not a punishment.
Newcastle 3-3 Man City
TROUBLE: Kieran Trippier received a red card for a rough challenge on Kevin de Bruyne, which was converted to a yellow card.
DETERMINED: Right decision.
DERMOT SAYS: I can understand why the referee gave the red card. He had a ‘staring down the barrel’ look, he thought he had kicked him in the knee. I think Peter Bankes was brilliant, he watched it and asked Jarred Gillett what he saw. He turned to him and said, ‘I would describe it as a skeptical tackle, but not serious. He said, ‘he didn’t catch him with the studs on his knee, I suggest you go to the screen and have a look’. He went and looked and, to his credit, he agreed and the right decision was made.
Fulham 3-2 Brentford
TROUBLE: Christian Norgaard is shown a yellow card for a challenge on Jay Stansfield – it should have been red?
DETERMINED: Right decision.
DERMOT SAYS: Not a nice ball, but a yellow card. He’s short, and it catches him on the ankle – and the indicators they work on are on the ankle. I think he’s just at the top.
TROUBLE: Joao Palhinha handed a yellow card for an elbow to Ben Mee – should it have been a red card?
DETERMINED: Correct decision to show a yellow card.
DERMOT SAYS: Again I think yellow card because I think he jumped on him, but he didn’t jump on him leading with elbow or forearm. I think it looks bad because of the way Ben Mee came back. But it’s a challenge that seems worse than it is.
West Ham 0-2 Brighton
TROUBLE: Penalty for Brighton for Thilo Kehrer’s foul on Danny Welbeck at the edge of the box.
DETERMINED: Right decision – the goal line is inside the box.
DERMOT SAYS: My immediate reaction was the penalty, obviously VAR had to check. What people don’t realize is that the penalty area belongs to the goalkeeper, so a foul in the box is a penalty. Welbeck’s warm-up was definitely in the box and that was the only check, was it inside or outside. It is done very quickly and there is no need to bring the referee to the screen as it is realistic.
Leeds 3-0 Chelsea
TROUBLE: Kalidou Koulibaly was sent off for two bookings.
DETERMINED: Right call.
DERMOT SAYS: There are no arguments for both. You see the second one, and if you’ve been shown a yellow card, do you need to do that? He ran past him, but he made it very clear that he was going to knock him down.
