Revealed Ferrari 296 GT3 racing car with V-6 “engine”

Last week, Ferrari gave the first look at its new GT3 race car based on the 296 GTB.

The car completed its first test in April at Ferrari’s Fiorano circuit, and after a similar process later this year will be used to replace the current 488 GT3.

The first confirmed race was in the January 2023 Daytona 24 Hours, the opening lap of the IMSA SportsCar Championship. And when it starts racing, it will have CHEAP Porsche 911 GT3 to compete with.

296 GT3 has a sharp design with many aerodynamic elements that together increase downforce 20% higher than 488 GT3. The inspiration for the design came from the 250 LM, the car that brought Ferrari the final victory at 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1965.

The 296 GT3 shares the powertrain with the 296 GTB, although due to technical regulations it omits the electrified elements of the road car. We’ll remind you the road car is powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 and an electric motor sandwiched between the engine and an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The 296 GTB’s engine makes 654 hp on its own while the electric motor adds 164 hp to bring the total to 818 hp.

Instead, the race car uses only the V-6 engine, rated here at about 600 horsepower. The engine is positioned further forward and lower than the road car, lowering the center of gravity and also helping to improve the torsional stiffness of the aluminum frame, which is about 10% higher than the 488 GT3. The race car also bypasses the road car’s DCT in favor of a six-speed sequential transmission.

The 296 GT3 has a slightly better wheelbase than the road car, and the suspension design is also significantly different from the 488 GT3. The front and rear double wishbones were chosen to aid traction at high speeds and reduce tire stress. The brakes have also been revised and upgraded, with newly designed brake calipers (6 pistons front and 4 pistons rear) and rotors (15.75 inches front and 13 inches rear). ). The wheels are an 18-inch forged set in each corner. The dry weight of the vehicle is approximately 2,755 pounds.

The 296 GT3 has some big shoes to fill. The 488 GT3 has scored 107 titles from its first race to date, with 429 wins from 770 starts. Those numbers make it Ferrari’s most successful race car to date. But as good as the 296 GT3 could be, it will likely be overshadowed by Ferrari’s Le Mans Hypercar racing car will also compete from 2023, specifically in the Hypercar class of the FIA World Endurance Championship and possibly the Grand Touring Prototype of the SportsCar Championship.

A race car based on the 296 GTB for the Ferrari Challenge one-production series will also be prepared, although the timing is uncertain.
