Researchers say social intelligence is the next frontier for AI

Siri and the Google Assistant can schedule meetings on-demand, but they don’t have the social savvy to independently prioritize appointments—yet. Artificial intelligence (AI) may be smart, but it is stunted by a lack of social skills, according to China-based researchers.

They published their assessment of the current situation and called for future directions in CAAI artificial intelligence research.

“Artificial intelligence has changed our society and Daily life“, first author Lifeng Fan, National Key Laboratory of General Artificial Intelligence, Beijing Institute of General Artificial Intelligence (BIGAI). “The next important challenge for AI in the future. What is that? We think Artificial Social Intelligence (ASI) is the next big frontier.”

ASI, the researchers say, covers various sub-fields, including social cognition, Theory of Mind – the understanding that other people think from their point of view – and social interaction. By using cognitive science and computational modeling to identify the gap between AI systems and human social intelligence, as well as current issues and future directions, Fan said This sector will be better equipped for development.

“ASI is different and challenging than our physical understanding of work; it depends a lot on context,” says Fan. “Here, the context can be as broad as culture and common sense or at least the shared experience of two friends. This unique challenge prevents standard algorithms from solving ASI problems in real-world environments, often complex, ambiguous, dynamic, random, partially observable, and multi-agent.”

As such, Fan said, ASI requires a holistic approach, as improving specific components of an ASI system may not always lead to improved performance — unlike other systems. modern AI system. Instead, ASI requires the ability to interpret latent social cues, such as eye roll or yawn, to understand the mental states of other triggers, such as beliefs and intentions, and at the same time cooperate on a common mission.

“The multidisciplinary study informs and inspires research on ASI: Human Social Intelligence Research provides insight into backgrounds, curriculum, points of view,” Fan said. comparisons and standards needed to develop ASI with human-like characteristics”.

“We focus on the three most important aspects and are inextricably linked with society Intelligence: social awarenessTheory of Mind and social interaction, because they are based on solid foundations scientific awareness theories and are the tools available to develop computational models in these fields.”

According to Fan, the best approach is a more holistic approach that mimics the way humans communicate with each other and with the world around them. This requires an open-ended and interactive environment, as well as looking at how to better incorporate human-like biases into ASI models.

“To accelerate ASI in the future, we recommend taking a more holistic, human-like approach, to use different learning methods such as lifelong learning, multi-faceted learning, and more. tasks, learning once/several times, super learning, etc”, Fan said.

“We need to identify new problems, create new environments and datasets, establish new evaluation protocols, and build new computational models. The ultimate goal is to equip high-level AI ASI.” and enhance human well-being with the help of Artificial Social Network Intelligence.”
