Researchers develop phase change key for new hardware security

As more and more data is shared and stored digitally, the number of data breaches taking place around the world is increasing. Scientists are discovering new ways to secure and protect data from increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks.

Researchers have developed a low-power, scalable, reconfigurable, and highly resilient hardware security appliance to AI attacks. phase transition material. This research was led by Assistant Professor Desmond Loke from the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), and the study was published in the journal Advanced Science.

“We have developed a new hardware security appliance that can eventually be deployed to protect data across sectors and industries, because of individual data breaches,” said Dr. Loke. is increasing day by day.”

The device, known as physically unreplicable function (PUF), is a new type of phase change PUF that is scalable, more energy efficient, and more secure against AI attacks than PUF Traditional silicon. This is because the electrical and physical properties of the material change phase, along with the fabrication process.

The SUTD research team has built a group of phase-change devices that reversibly convert between the glassy amorphous state and the ordered crystalline state. They then use the change in device conductivity to construct the PUF due to the inherent randomness arising from production processthis is not displayed by conventional silicon based devices.

The researchers modeled the characteristics of the actual phase change device to generate simulations of more PUFs based on the phase change. Dr. Loke and his team used machine learning, a method that allows an AI to study a system and find new patterns, to test the security of the PUF. To test whether the AI can use this training to make predictions about the encrypted key and reveal the system’s insecurities, the researchers trained the AI using simulation data. simulate phase change PUF.

Dr. Loke added: “The average person cannot develop a model from a large amount of data, but neural networks can. We also found that the coding process cannot learn and the AI cannot learn. could not develop a model to decode phase-changing PUF.”

Since potential hackers cannot use a “stolen” key to reverse engineer a device for future use, resistance machine learning attacks make PUF more secure. The phase change PUF can also generate a new key instantly via reconfiguration mode if the key is hacked.

Phase change PUFs can be used in many applications with these features, along with the ability to operate at high temperatures. Future research could pave the way for its use in home appliances, flexible and printable electronics, and other devices.
