Report: Wasp signs LiAngelo Ball with no guarantee deal

Giant hornet signing a free agent protection contract LiAngelo Ball under a one-year contract, according to Rod Boone of The Charlotte Observer. Agreement will not be guaranteed, adds The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

Brother of point guard Hornets LaMelo Ball, LiAngelo signed an Ex Expect 10 contract with the team ahead of the 2021-2022 season and spent the year with Greensboro Swarm, the Charlotte’s G League affiliate. In 28 games for Swarm, he averaged 4.6 PPG and 1.1 RPG shooting .395/.357/.667 in 13.2 minutes per contest.

LiAngelo Ball has also played for the Hornets’ Summer League team in each of the last two seasons, appearing in three games for the club this July in Las Vegas.

The Hornets only have 13 players on a fully guaranteed salary, so there is, in theory, a path to a spot on the regular-season 15 player roster for Ball. However, given his modest output at G League level, it’s hard to imagine him earning one of those backing squad spots.

If Ball’s new deal includes a Figure 10 terms, he will be eligible for up to $50K in rewards if given up by Charlotte and then spend at least 60 days in Greensboro with Swarm as a returning rights player.
