Report: Suns keep coach Monty Williams on long-term extension

The reigning NBA Coach of the Year will stay with the Phoenix Suns for the foreseeable future. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPNMonty Williams agreed to a long-term contract extension with the Suns on Saturday.

While the terms of the contract have yet to be announced, Williams still has two years left on his final contract with the team.

Williams, 50, has been head coach of the Suns since 2019, leading the team to a record 149-78 regular season during his three years in charge. Phoenix qualified for the 2021 Western Conference Finals, but lost to the Milwaukee Bucks in six games at the 2021 NBA Finals.

Last season, the Suns finished with the best regular season record in the NBA and Williams Wins Coach of the Year. However, the team’s season ended with a massive loss to the Dallas Mavericks in Game 7 of the Western Conference Semifinals.

Williams played a decade in the NBA with the New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers. He began his coaching career in 2005 as an assistant with the Portland Trail Blazers and became head coach of the New Orleans Hornets (later renamed the Pelicans) in 2010.

In five seasons with New Orleans, Williams’ team had a record of 173-221. The team has reached the knockout stages twice, but has only won two games in total appearances.
