Renfield: When Nic Cage’s Dracula Movie Releases, The Latest Trailer And Everything Else To Know

The premise sounds like a fever dream: Nicholas Cage plays Dracula in a horror comedy based on the tout of Robert Kirkman—you know, the Zombie guy—played by the man responsible for The Lego Batman Movie director. And yet, here we are–Renfield is coming out this year and we can’t wait.

The concept is pretty straightforward, given how absolutely insane the molding and manufacturing process is. The story revolves around RM Renfield (surprise!), Count Dracula’s henchman. You might recognize his name, if you’re a fan of classic Dracula literature and media. He is Dracula’s henchman and devoted acquaintance, who is featured extensively in Bram Stoker’s original novel and numerous adaptations of it. However, this movie will likely have a different side of the character as it is a horror comedy.

What does it talk about?

So far, we’ve only had one diary line and one trailer to work with, but we do know that the film will be set in modern-day New Orleans and feature Renfield falling in love with a character created for movie, a traffic cop named Rebecca. Based on the trailer, it looks like Renfield will become some kind of action hero beyond Dracula’s henchman role, and he’ll be trying to get out of his “toxic relationship” with his “boss”.

Who’s in there?

Renfield’s cast is pretty stacked. Here is the lineup so far:

Who directs?

The film will be directed by Chris McKay, who you may recognize from The Lego Batman Movie and The Tomorrow War.

Who wrote it?

Renfield was written by Ryan Ridley (Rick and Morty) and the story was developed by Robert Kirkman, author of The Walking Dead.

Have we seen Nic Cage as Dracula?

Correct! Cage appears briefly in the trailer with full Dracula aura. That might be exactly what you’d expect, though unlike his 1989 film The Vampire’s Kiss.

Is Renfield really based on the Dracula novel?

This probably won’t surprise you, but based on the trailer, no, not really. However, it looks like there will be some Easter Eggs in the Dracula novels! We even see in the trailer where Renfield eats a bug – aside from looking gross, bugs are one of Renfield’s main foods in the original story.
