Renée Zellweger’s health: ‘I’m not well’ – the actress explains the reason behind taking a break from acting


Most recently, the 52-year-old Oscar winner became “unrecognizable” as she prepared for her latest role. The actress will appear in the upcoming NBC crime series The Thing About Pam, which sees her wearing prosthetic limbs to play the title character. However, most fans were confused because they didn’t immediately recognize it as her. The role comes after one of Zellweger’s “best performances” in the 2019 biopic Judy, which chronicles the final years of Hollywood legend Judy Garland. While promoting the 2019 film, the actress also opened up about some of her personal health battles and the depression she suffered during her hiatus in 2010.

In an interview with New York Magazine at the time, the two-time Oscar winner said she fell into depression and needed to take a break from acting in order to become popular with Bridget Jones’s Diary and Chicago.

“I am not well,” said Zellweger. “I didn’t take care of myself. I’m last on my priority list. ”

Faced with the fact that there could be a problem with his health, Zellweger sought the help of a therapist.

“He [the therapist] realized that I spent 99% of my life as a public figure and only a small part of my real life,” she recalls.

“I needed to not have something to do all the time, not knowing what I was going to do in the next two years. I want to let some accidents. There needs to be some silence for ideas to come in. “

In addition to the advice her therapist gave her, Zellweger got some wise advice from friend and actress Salma Hayek.

“She shared this beautiful… metaphor? The same? “Rose doesn’t bloom all year round…unless it’s plastic,” explains Zellweger.

“I see. Because what does that mean? It means you have to fake that you can go and do this next thing.

Taking the advice, Zellweger took a step back and didn’t appear in another film until 2016, where she reprized the role that brought her international success in Bridget Jones’s Baby.

Reflecting on how much pressure still exists on young actors today and how she has changed her life as a result, Zellweger added:[When] you’re really unhealthy and unbalanced, and you know, you’re dying, you look back on it [life] and wonder what happened.

“I had so many different places to live but no home. There’s no home where I actually unpack the paintings and put them on a shelf… I have two suitcases.

“I had a good five years when I was happy and at a new chapter that no one even knew about.

“I’m not in people’s consciousness anymore, so they don’t immediately connect. It’s a quieter life, and I love it.”
