A ‘selfless and kind’ soldier who fell during the week of the record heatwave has died in a ‘inactivity incident’, the Department of Defense (MoD) confirmed.

Commando Connor Morrison, 20, stationed at Woodbridge in Suffolk, died in Ipswich on July 23.

The soldier, from the 23rd Airborne Engineer Regiment, was taken by ambulance to Ipswich Hospital two days earlier, after he was reported to be having difficulty breathing at Rock Barracks in Sutton Heath, Suffolk.

At the time, the NHS Trust of the Eastern Ambulance Service said it had been called to ‘reports of a man with respiratory problems’, and Suffolk Police said they had received a report. reported from the ambulance service that ‘a male has collapsed’.

Earlier that week, on July 19, a new UK record high temperature of 40.3 degrees Celsius was recorded in Coningsby, Lincolnshire. The Homeland Security Administration, Suffolk Police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) opened an investigation into his death in August.

The commander of the 23rd Airborne Engineer Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Jack Crossley, paid tribute to the ‘professional soldier with a lot of promise’, adding: ‘Inquisitive and enthusiastic, he worked hard. just to hit his goals in every stage of training and impress his instructors. their knowledge and skills. More importantly, he is a loyal friend and a true player on the team. ‘

He added: ‘Sapper Morrison is a truly selfless and kind professional soldier who makes friends wherever he goes.
