Relocating? Remember to Plan For This

Moving anywhere new is exciting, but relocating and restarting your life is the adventure of a lifetime. With so much to plan and organise, things can get overwhelming and you might end up feeling frazzled and even a little panicked.

This is completely natural, but that doesn’t mean you have to accept your fate as being overstressed for the next six months of your life. Instead, take control and get planning. The more finer details you can plan out, the less chance you have of falling victim to the madness of moving.

Moving Details

First and foremost, you need to take control of the major sticking points. These will include organising the moving company, finding a new place to live, booking air tickets or planning your road trip, obtaining Visas, getting moving insurance and starting to pack.

If you’re planning on shipping your car over, research companies like Montway to help you through the process. If you need a new job where you’re moving to, start looking online for vacancies. All of these important details should be prioritised and handled a few weeks (or even months) ahead of your move.

Somewhere to Stay

If you’ve sold or bought a home, need to end your rental agreement and start a new one, or any combination of these, there’s a large chance that all the dates aren’t going to align and you might end up with up to a month of having nowhere to call your own.

In these cases, you will need to find a short-term living arrangement until everything comes together. If you have friends or family nearby, find out if you could stay with them for a while. However, if the period will be longer than a week or two, consider finding a more private and personal space to stay like a hotel or guest house, where you can make yourself at home for a while.

Taking Care of Your Health

Moving can be tough on the body and mind. With all the stress, physical work and the tendency to live on takeout for a week, it’s likely that your health will take a beating. Try to avoid this by planning ahead. Ensure that you get enough sleep, try to make time for both rest and exercise, and opt for healthy meals whenever possible.

Think about your family’s health too – instead of letting your children run rampant eating candy and potato chips while you’re busy, prepare some kid-friendly healthy snacks so you know they’re well-fuelled.

Time to Explore

A sure-fire way to suck all the joy out of your move is to place all your focus on the work that needs to be done. Of course, there is always plenty to do and limited time, however, you also need some downtime.

You’ll need to get to know your new neighbourhood, so taking some time to explore is a great way to incorporate some fun and relaxation into the moving process. Go on a few adventures, find your new favourite coffee shop and meet your neighbours!
