Redfall Story and Background
Redfall’s website gives us a brief summary of the game’s story, setting, and larger-than-life characters living in the world.
The game’s vampire enemies are actually seriously wrong science experiments. These creatures have cut off the town of Redfall from the rest of the world by blocking the sun.
Vampires are joined by a human faction that worships them, as seen in the first trailer. As a result, it seems likely that gunfights will often leave us dealing with both types of enemies – and possibly several more – at the same time.
fallen gameplay
Redfall is a story-driven, open-world, first-person shooter in which you choose from four playable heroes, each boasting their own unique personality and abilities, to confront the vampire vampire. These abilities can be upgraded as you progress, and you’ll also be able to experiment with different playstyles and loads. Here are four characters you can choose from — and their descriptions according to Bethesda:
- Layla Ellison: A biomedical engineering student interns at a research facility, where a fatal incident has given her extreme remote control abilities.
- Jacob Boyer: A former army sniper turned private contractor. Strange happenings on Redfall have left Jacob with a mysterious vampire eye and a ghostly crow who always stands by his side.
- Remi de la Rosa: A brilliant combat engineer who spent his life on the front lines. With the help of the robot group Bribón, she is determined to help rescue the survivors of Redfall.
- Devinder Crousley: An aspiring cryptographer and inventor. Armed with a weapon of his own creation, he is on a mission to prove himself.
According to the Official website (opens in a new tab)Redfall will combine “single-player and multiplayer options seamlessly, allowing players to venture into the dark alone or team up with up to three friends for four-player co-op”.
The use of the word “seamless” implies that a drop-in co-op system could be implemented in Redfall, allowing players to join other people’s games without having to return to the main menu. Arkane has confirmed that, in co-op, players will be able to play as any character, regardless of whether their teammates have chosen them or not. That means you can all play Layla, for example, if you want. For players who prefer to play alone, the official website says you can build your character around playing alone, catering to both.
According to Bethesda, the types of vampires you’ll face in Redfall include “sneaky vampires that grab you and separate you from your team”, “giant vampires capable of tearing you apart and your party to pieces” and “God-like vampires strong enough to obscure the sun”.
However, it’s not just vampires you need to worry about. These vampires have developed a small army of cultists, which the Redfall website describes as “well equipped and ready to die for a vampire.” After setting up bases and patrol routes all over the island, you’ll need to be careful.
Redfall’s website also states that the game’s open world will be “always changing” and will be a “setting that reacts to your choices and actions.” Between the cult’s bases and the “twisted spiritual space” known as the Nest, there’s a lot of work to be done before the island returns to safety.
Redfall news and rumors
How is Redfall similar to other Arkane games?
During the Xbox Games Extended presentation in 2022, Bethesda’s Pete Hines explained the similarities and differences between Redfall and developer Arkane’s previous work. Specifically, Hines explains that, even though Redfall has co-op elements, there’s still an enjoyable single-player experience.
“On the surface, this is a first-person shooter that you can play alone or with up to four players and so, you know, right off the bat you can tell this is not a game. It’s a single-player game so it has to be very different,” Hines said. And, don’t get me wrong, there are totally different ways but as people play games and even as they watch more games, I think they’ll start to see all that about a game. Arkane that they love and appreciate.”
“If you want to play a solo game and have a great Arkane story then you can totally do that in Redfall but you can also do things that you can’t do in an Arkane game, like like experiencing it with friends and learning how the whole can be more than the sum of the parts, such as bringing out the full potential of each character,” Hines continued. “I think the more people appreciate that, the more likely you are to want to try playing Redfall in a number of ways. You might want to play it a little bit by yourself, play with other people, and this is a game that lets you do either or both of those things, however, as you see fit.”
Compare with Left 4 Dead
During the Xbox Games Extended presentation, Bethesda’s Pete Hines also mentioned the comparison between Redfall and co-op shooters like Left 4 Dead.
“If you watch, for example, a fight shot, you can watch Left 4 Dead or Back 4 Blood or any of these and say ‘oh, I see a lot of characters facing a lot of enemies and so it’s the same game,'” Hines said. “But I think that would be detrimental, that it’s all about the mid-battle as well as the battle itself, combining different skills and abilities the way you do…that’s it. the Arkane things that really bring that extra special element that makes their game so appealing.”
