Red Knobs, Great Escape Lead Overflow Derby Canada


The Queen’s Plate at Honeysuckle This isn’t the only bet race for 3-year-olds going a mile and a quarter this weekend in Canada.

In Edmonton at Centuries milean overflow field of 12, plus one also eligible, was given the $200,000 Canadian Derby (G3), among them a 1-2 finish from the Manitoba Derby, Red knob and Great escape . Both ponies are additions to trainer Robertino Diodoro’s barn this summer.

Red Knobs, claimed $50,000 from second place finish at Churchill Downs July 3, beat Great Escape 1 3/4 length August 1 in the Manitoba Derby for owners Robert G. Nokes and Robert K. Nokes. Chasing his steady friend from the start, he took command inside the eighth column and withdrew late.

Great Escape, who raced in May for WinStar Ranch and coach Rudy Brisset, has since finished second among starts for Diodoro and owners Arnold Bennewith, Rick Wiest, Clayton Wiest, Lana Wiest, Randy Howg, R6 Stables, Gary Kropp, and Norman Tremblay. Before running behind Red Knobs, he ran after 6 1/2 lengths Pray for peace in the Derby Test at Assiniboia Downs July 11th.

Registration for

Prayforpeace, also racing on Saturday, disappoints in the Manitoba Derby, placing a distant fourth.

Other top prospects for the Canadian Derby include Gunner , Soaringforthesun and Regal Riot .

Saturday’s card also includes three stakes worth CA$100,000 each.
