Read Suella Braverman’s letter in full: “I have made a mistake; I accept responsibility; I resign.” – and PM’s reply | Politics News

Suella Braverman has resigned as foreign minister, criticizing Prime Minister Liz Truss while explaining her reasons for leaving.

A well-known Tory power figure told Ms Truss she had “technically violated” the rules by send an official document from a personal email and now take responsibility.

Here is her full letter:

Dear Prime Minister,

It is with great regret that I am choosing to resign my position.

Earlier today, I sent an official document from my personal email to a trusted colleague in congress as part of a policy engagement and for the purpose of soliciting support for the policy. government on migration. This constitutes a technical violation of the rules.

As you know, this document is a draft of the Minister’s Written Statement on Migration, which is about to be published. Much of it has been communicated to MPs. However, I have to go.

As soon as I realized my mistake, I quickly reported this on official channels and informed the cabinet secretary. The business of government relies on people taking responsibility for their mistakes.

Pretending that we haven’t made a mistake, continuing as if people can’t see that we’ve made it, and hoping that things will magically turn out right is not serious politics. I made a mistake; I accept responsibility; I give up.

It is clear to everyone that we are going through a tumultuous time. I wonder about the direction of the government.

Not only have we broken key promises made to voters, but I am seriously concerned about the government’s commitment to honoring the manifesto commitments, such as reducing overall migration and prevent illegal migration, especially dangerous small boats.

It is an honor to serve at Home Office. Even in the short time that I’ve been here, it’s clear to me that there’s still work to be done, in terms of delivering on the priorities of the British people.

They deserve a policy they can respect, an immigration policy they want and voted with such clear numbers at the last election, and laws that serve the public interest, not the interests of selfish protesters.

I am very grateful to all the officers, special advisors and my delegation who have helped all during my time as Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, I would especially like to thank the public security officers and sisters. heroic people and all those who work at the Border Force and in our security service.

To oversee Operation Bridge – the largest policing operation in a generation – is a great honor and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve.

I wish my successor good luck.

Best regards,

Rt Hon Suella Braverman KC MP

The Prime Minister replied:

Dear Suella,

Thanks for mailing me. I accept your resignation and respect the decision you have made. It is important that the Code of Ministers is maintained and that the confidentiality of the Cabinet is respected.

I am grateful for your service as Secretary of the Interior. Your time in office is marked by your unwavering commitment to keeping the British people safe. You oversaw the largest policing operation ever, as thousands of officers were deployed from forces across the UK to ensure the safety of the Royal Family and all those gathered to mourning for the Queen of England.

I am also grateful for your previous work as Attorney General, my Cabinet colleague and especially your work on the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill.

I look forward to working with you in the future and wish you all the best.

Best wishes,

(Signed by Liz Truss)
