NEW DELHI: India needs to appoint a new Twenty20 captain and follow suit Englandpattern to recover their fortunes in that format, former head coach Ravi Shastri said on Thursday.
Rohit Sharma35 years old, still captain in all forms of India but the team’s defeat in T20 semi-finals World Cup in Australia have urged calls for fresh blood to be injected into the side.
Rohit and his companions Virat kohli and KL Rahul was rested for India’s tour of New Zealand, where Hardik Pandya will lead the T20 team while Shikhar Dhawan will be in charge of one-day international tournaments.
“I think for T20 cricket, there’s no harm in having a new captain, because the volume of cricket is such that it’s never going to be easy for one player to play all three modes of the game, ” Shastri told a virtual press conference.
“Rohit took the lead in the day-long and Test matches. There’s no harm in identifying a new T20 Captain and if his name is Hardik Pandya, so be it.”
The former all-rounder was impressed at how England turned into a white ball hitter and won the T20 World Cup on Sunday to become the first team to hold both global titles at the 50-year-old. and 20 years old at the same time.
“They sit down and say ‘We’re going to change our resources, we’re going to identify the best players for the format, whether it’s T20 cricket or 50-overs, and if that means anything. are certain high-profile players to be sidelined, then let it be.’
“They have fearless young players who can adapt to that style of play without having to change too much.
“It’s a template that can be easily followed. India has a lot of resources and I think it can start right now, from this tour.”
The 60-year-old doesn’t think Indian players need to participate in T20 tournaments abroad to get used to those conditions.
“They are perfectly fine playing the IPL (Indian Premier League) and focusing on domestic cricket.
“We also need them to play domestic cricket.”
