Rats Bop To The Beat And Like Music, Says Study
The ability to move precisely to the beat of music is said to be an innate human skill. But now, scientists have shown that rats can move to the music of Queen, Lady Gaga and Mozart and even bang their heads to a human-like rhythm, a behavior previously thought to be unique to humans. human, according to The New York Post.
According to research published Friday on The journal Science Advances, researchers at the University of Tokyo played music to 10 mice, which were fitted with wireless accelerometers to measure their head movements. Music includes Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, Queen’s One Bites the Dust, Mozart’s Sonata for two pianos in D Major, Michael Jackson’s Beat It and Maroon 5’s Sugar.
Beat perception and synchronization within 120 to 140 beats per minute (BPM) are common in humans and commonly used in music composition. Sky News reported that researchers found that the rats struggled to keep up with all the music while playing at 132 beats per minute, just like humans. But research shows they like it less when the work is slowed down or sped up.

“Rats exhibit innate – i.e., not trained or pre-exposed to music – rhythm synchronization most pronounced within 120-140 bpm (beats per minute), humans also exhibit clear beat synchrony most obvious,” said Associate Professor Hirokazu Takahashi of the University of Tokyo in a statement Press Release.
“Next, I would like to reveal how other musical properties such as melody and harmony are related to brain dynamics. I am also interested in the how, why, and what mechanisms of brain dynamics. The brain creates human cultural domains such as art, music, science, technology, and religion,” said Takahashi.
“I believe this question is the key to understanding how the brain works and developing the next generation of AI. Also, as an engineer, I’m interested in using music to drive have a happy life.”
