Rasheed Wallace Not Joining Lakers Coaching Team

After the initial report at the beginning of June that Rasheed Wallace is on track to join the Lakers coaching staff as one of the assistants to new head coach Darvin Ham, Shams Charania by The Athletic say it doesn’t happen anymore. According to Charania, Wallace will not be on the payroll of Ham.

Sportando’s Emiliano Carchia first reported on Friday (via Twitter) that Wallace was “very unlikely” to be the Lakers’ assistant.

Wallace, who played for six NBA teams from 1995-2013, has had four All-Star teams and won championships during that time, totaling more than 16,000 career points and more than 7,400 career bounces. He’s done a little coaching since retiring, including with the Pistons in 2013/14 and as a University of Memphis assistant in ’21/22.

Ham and Wallace were teammates in Detroit for the 2004 and 2005 seasons, winning the title together in ’04.

ham confirmed in June that Wallace was a candidate for an assistant coaching role with the Lakers – it’s unclear why it didn’t work out. Perhaps Wallace or the Lakers decided to go the other way before negotiations got serious, or maybe the two sides were unable to reach agreement on Wallace’s role and/or financial compensation.
