Raptors, Spurs swap Goran Dragic, Thaddeus Young

Raptors and Spurs have agreed to a transaction that will send forward Thaddeus Young to Toronto to exchange for security points Goran DragicThe Athletic’s Shams Charania report (Twitter link).

According to Charania (via Twitter), big man Drew Eubanks and the Pistons’ 2022 second-round pick also head to Toronto in the deal, with the Raptors sending San Antonio their 2022 first-round pick (top 14 protected). That pick will be defended in the top 13 in 2023 if it doesn’t change hands this season and will become two second-rounders in the future if it doesn’t translate in 23.

The Raptors have been shopping for Dragic and draft capital for much of the season as they look to buy a player who can step into their rotation. Dragic, who was part of the comeback in Kyle Lowry signed and traded last summer, appearing in just five games against Toronto before leaving the team for personal reasons.

In Young, Toronto has a tough, playoff-tested veteran who – like Dragic – was a pay-for-purpose throw-in in a season-trade and sign-up, was sent from Chicago to San Antonio in DeMar DeRozan agree. Young had a good year in Chicago in 2020-21, averaging 12.1 PPG, 6.2 RPG, and 4.3 APG in 68 games (24.3 MPG), but wasn’t on his plans. Spurs and haven’t played much this season.

Eubanks, 25, could also play a few minutes in Toronto after spending the first four seasons of his NBA career in San Antonio. He has averaged 4.7 PPG and 4.0 RPG in 49 games (12.1 MPG) this season.

Young has a $14.2 million salary expiring soon, while Eubanks is earning the bare minimum this season, with a non-guaranteed minimum wage for 2022-23. The Raptors will create some extra breathing space below the luxury tax by exchanging Dragic’s expiring $19.4 million contract for those two players.

Meanwhile, the Spurs – who were previously fairly quiet ahead of the deal deadline – have now completed three deals in the 2021-22 season. Their goal in this deal is to continue stockpiling draft assets, so Dragic is unlikely to be on the list.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (via Twitter) reports that Dragic and Spurs are expected to negotiate a buyout, with the Mavericks, Bucks, Bulls and Clippers among his potential suitors. Dallas is arguably the frontrunner, according to Sportsnet.ca’s Michael Grange and Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes (Twitter
link).

The Raptors have opened their 15-man roster, so they won’t have to give up a player to officially close the deal.
