Rain in Ecuador: Deadly landslides hit Baños

At least six people were killed in a landslide in the city of Baños, central Ecuador.

Some houses were buried under tons of mud, poured down the hillside after days of torrential rain.

More than a dozen people were injured and a main road was cut off.

A state of emergency has been declared in Baños.

About 30 people believed missing after the landslide have been found alive, officials said.

Heavy machinery was dispatched to the area to clear roads blocked by rocks and mud.

Local media reported that of the six people confirmed dead, five were members of the same family.

Baños residents are urged to stock up on bottled water as risk management officials warn that tap water supplies could be affected by heavy rains.

The city’s mayor also asked local residents to stay home to minimize traffic on affected roads.

Schools will be closed on Monday in Baños and classes will be held online.

A shelter has been opened for people whose homes were damaged.

Meteorologists said the heavy rain was caused by a low pressure area moving through Ecuador on Sunday.

The heavy rains occurred just a few months after the South American country experienced a drought.

The low pressure area has moved north.

El Salvador, in Central America, has warned of possible floods and landslides.
