Congress Rahul Gandhi will walk from Kanyakumari to Kashmir in 148 days of Bharat Jodo Yatra and sleep in a cargo cabin at night, the National Assembly said.

The container cabins are scheduled to arrive in Kanyakumari on September 5. The 3500km yatra ship will depart from Kanyakumari on September 7 with a massive public demonstration.

The party – which has been on a downward spiral since its defeat to the BJP in 2014 – planned the march as a major public-contact exercise ahead of the 2024 general election.

Congressional leaders, however, denied any political angle and insisted that the yatra was “meaning for peace and not division”.

Mr. Gandhi, along with his mother Sonia Gandhi and sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, are currently abroad. They visited Gandhi’s hometown in Italy, where her mother passed away this weekend.

Parliament spokesman Dr Shama Mohamed told NDTV that Rahul Gandhi would stay in these containers throughout the padyatra.

Minister MK Stalin, with whom the DMK is an ally of Parliament, will be present at the launch of the Bharat Jodo yatra, the sources said.
The march also took place amid preparations for the party’s organized election.

Parliament said it would publish the list of voters at the request of senior leaders Shashi Tharoor, Manish Tiwari and Karti Chidambaram. All contestants will be given the list but it will not be shared on the website, the party said.
