Rahul Dravid: ‘The workload of key players will be monitored during this year’s IPL’ | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: After questioning the availability of senior Indian players in the upcoming IPL considering the ODI World Cup scheduled to be held later this year in India, coaching chief officer Rahul Dravid have made it clear that they will compete in the tournament unless there are concerns about injury.
Workload management is what turns out to be one of the key factors in Indian cricket and in recent times it has been seen that the workload of seniors like Virat kohli and Rohit Sharma are being managed by resting them in T20Is.

Based on BCCIUnder its new policy, the workload of key players will be monitored during this year’s IPL by the NCA and franchisees considering the 50-plus-man World Cup at home in October-November.
“Workload management is part of the game today.
“We continue to look at these things. You would call the respite we gave some of our boys (Rohit, Virat, KL) in the T20 series as workload management” , Dravid answered a question from PTI during the press conference before the 3rd ODI against New Zealand.
“Injury management and workload management are two different things, we must continue to balance the two based on our priorities in the short term considering the amount of cricket we play and ensuring make sure we have big players available for us in the big leagues.”

He added that players “targeted” for the ODI World Cup will play IPL because it will help them gauge their T20 skills.
“Regarding the IPL, the NCA and our medical team are constantly in touch with the brands and if there are any problems or injuries we will contact them. Unless the players are injured or there are other concerns then of course I think BCCI has the right to withdraw them.
“But if they are healthy, we will release them to the IPL because it is an important tournament. It is a very big tournament for BCCI, as well as in terms of our preparations for the T20 2024 World Cup. That’s important because it helps us support the performance of our players in the specific T20 format.”
After going through a long difficult period, Kohli returned to form in last year’s Asian Cup and continued his good form at the T20 World Cup but batting conductor, captain Rohit and KL Rahul did not contribute. Faced in a T20 match since then the marquee event in Australia.
The trio will miss the T20 series against New Zealand starting next week. But Dravid feels he needs some respite ahead of a two-week camping trip ahead of the all-important Tests for Australia series starting next month.
“You need to play certain whiteball tournaments at certain intervals. Playing four Border Gavaskar matches to land a potential WTC spot is crucial.
“There are some whiteball tournaments that we have to prioritize and after T20 WC. Virat has played all six games (ODIs). He will rest with Rohit and some others and then come back refreshed. on February 2 for a camp two weeks before the Tests.”
