Rafael Nadal says ‘a part of his life left’ when Roger Federer retired | Tennis News

Rafael Nadal admit that “part of his life left” with Federer when his big rival retires tennis – with both players leaving an emotional wound on the court after the Swiss played his last match in September at the Laver Cup.
The two, who have won 42 Grand Slam singles titles, joined forces in a doubles match for Federer’s swan at the Laver Cup in London.
After that match ended, the image of both players crying while sitting next to each other during the post-match ceremony went viral.
“Someone that I admired, with whom I was a rival and I also shared many good things on and off the court is gone,” Nadal told reporters before a friendly match in Argentina.
“In that sense, all those moments, the emotions you have before playing a Grand Slam final, an important tournament, everything that precedes those matches. It’s different from other games.
“You know you won’t live like that again and part of my life is left with him (when he retires). It’s also emotional to say goodbye to someone so important to our sport.”
The pair have faced each other 40 times over the past two decades in one of the sport’s longest-running contests, with the Spaniard leading 24-16.
After picking up a number of injuries and illnesses in recent years, Nadal’s future in the sport remains murky even though he has won two major titles during the season.
He continued his victory at the Australian Open by claiming a record-extending 14th French Open title in June – although he had to take multiple injections to numb the pain in his table. left leg.
Abdominal injury forced the 36-year-old Spaniard to withdraw from Wimbledon before the semi-final against Nick Kyrgios.
While not detailing his own retirement plans, Nadal said: “My time will come when it must.
“I’m getting ready for my next life outside of tennis.
“I don’t think it will be a problem for me other than adapting to the changes. There are things in my life that are as important or more important than tennis.”
Nadal is on an exhibition tour in South and Central America with Norwegian Casper Ruud.
