The Far Hills downhill will honor the late John Forbes – a match at Monmouth Park, where he trained for 40 years – with the first John Forbes Memorial Race in the six-race program taking place on October 15th.
The 101st Far Hills Race Meeting will provide $575,000 in wallets for six races at Moorland Ranch in Far Hills, NJ, highlighted by a $250,000 First Class Grand Prix.
The John Forbes Memorial, the only flat race on the show, will take place over two miles on grass. It will be the last race on the six-race card and has a $100,000 purse. Forbes died at the age of 73 on January 31, 2021.
“John Forbes has been with Monmouth Park for 40 years in a variety of roles. He’s been a tireless advocate for the race, for the industry and for Monmouth Park,” said Dennis Drazin, President and CEO of Darby Development LLC, operator of Monmouth Parks. “It’s fitting that he has a race named in his honor.”
Forbes won 2,174 races before he retired from training in 2012 to focus on horsemen’s affairs, becoming president of the New Jersey Thoroughbred Riders Association when the corporation took over Monmouth Park from the United States Department of Agriculture. New Jersey Sports & Exhibition Authority. He was the top coach at Monmouth Park five times and won seven coaching titles at the Meadowlands. Forbes’ best horse is GISW sire Tale of the Cat and he helped launch the career of Hall of Fame racer Julie Krone.
