Disgraced R&B star R. Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Last year, Kelly was found guilty for crimes including child sexual exploitation, fraud, bribery and sex trafficking. The jury found that the government had proven Kelly headed a criminal conspiracy to recruit and coerce girls, boys and women into having sex.

During the week-long trial, many victims established a pattern that they would meet Kelly at a performance or in public, and an associate of Kelly would provide them with a phone number to call. From there, they will be inserted into a system of sexual and psychological abuse. Kelly forces his victims to perform sexual acts for gratification (which he often films). He established strict rules that dictated where his victims were allowed to go and who they were allowed to talk to. And he forces them to write letters or videotape themselves declaring that they are doing things on their own free will.

Before the judge announced Kelly’s sentence, seven women made their own statements about him and about the abuse they endured. Kelly didn’t even look at her accusers.

A woman identified in court as Angela said, “We will be able to come back to life.”

She said, “I represent every woman, boy, child, man you have ever suffered because of your reprehensible, inexplicable behaviour, and with that I let you be with yourself, Robert Sylvester Kelly.”

Another woman, known in court as Jane Doe 2, described suffering from depression and stress related to Kelly’s abuse. She stopped in her comments to ask him to pay attention as Kelly whispered to his lawyer. “I’m sorry,” she said. “I don’t want to interrupt his conversation.”

A man identified as Charles, another woman’s father, said in a resigned voice, “A lot of people love you and they hate us.” He noted that Kelly has expressed no remorse. Charles urged Kelly to confess and ask God’s forgiveness.

Judgment is given later decades of accusations against the multi-platinum singer. In 2008, he appeared in court in his hometown of Chicago for child pornography. He was acquit of all fees.

From there, Kelly continued to live her superstar life, performing around the world and selling out tickets.

In 2019, Lifetime archives Survive R. Kelly continued interest in the sexual abuse allegations against Kelly and sustained advocacy of the activists who pushed Kelly to become pull out waves and phases.

Later this summer, Kelly is expected to face another federal trial in Illinois on charges of child pornography and obstruction of justice.
