As New York City’s temperatures drop, the noise of the AC may be off, but the sounds of holiday traffic are louder than ever. Naturally, I used wireless headphones to get my daily dose of (hopefully) 8 hours of sleep. The latest pair in the test program are the QuietOn 3.1 earbuds.

QuietOn has entered the niche market of sleep earbuds, and the latest 3.1 model builds on the successes of the QuietOn 3.0 buds with improved active noise cancellation and ergonomic fit. learn more. After spending the past two weeks with the headphones, they’ve slowly climbed to the top of my bedside essentials list. That said, these products retail at $289 and are not without their flaws. Designed for sleep

First, the QuietOn 3.1 buds weigh just 1.8 grams, making them lighter than standard pairs of earbuds. The small size makes the most difference when your head rests on the pillow and with less pressure – especially for side sleepers like me.

Contributing to pressure relief is an in-tube fit protected by the plush, foam ear tips of the buds – just like traditional earplugs. Unlike typical silicone ear tips, the foam cushions fit snugly in your ear canal and allow the rest of the earbud to rest directly into your ear. Even then, it’s nice to see that QuietOn includes three different sizes of ear tips, so you can easily swap them out for a suitable fit.

The only problem is that although the headphones fit comfortably in my ears when I start to sleep, at least one of them is missing by sunrise time. As a hint to the makers: if you don’t incorporate the find-my-buds feature, then at least make the buds glow in the dark!

A case for good sleep

With its odd (and perhaps purposeful) pillow-like shape, the bud’s charging case is both compact and sturdy. It’s not the lightest box I’ve held, but it’s still easy to carry and distinguishable when it comes to travel bags.

The case also has three blue LEDs located just above the USB-C charging port that indicate the headset’s battery level. However, part of me wishes these were on the front of the case, as it’s easier to scan while the buds are charging.

How do these sound?

While comfort is desirable, the star of the QuietOn 3.1 earbuds so far is active noise cancellation (ANC). When you slide the bud into place, you have to wait about 30 seconds before you hear and feel the change in noise and pressure.

There’s a smooth transition from ambient noise to simply…nothing, as the buds adjust to fit your ears, creating an acoustic knob to lock in subtle white noise and ultimately block out the world around you – including your partner’s incessant snoring and time-lost partygoers. Passive noise cancellation of the ear tips with foam is the cherry on top.

Being a noise-sensitive sleeper myself, I tried sleeping with Advantages of second generation AirPods before but found them too cumbersome. As a result, I was impressed to find QuietOn’s ANC comparable to Apple’s ANC, while feeling less uncomfortable when worn while sleeping.

How long do these last?

QuietOn promises up to 28 hours of battery life with the 3.1 earbuds. Personally, I got four nights’ worth of battery without putting the buds back in the charging case, but I’ve noted that’s mostly because the buds kept falling out of my ears and going to standby instead of ANC. . If you’re after a more residential experience with QuietOn earbuds, I wouldn’t expect less than three days of use before needing to be charged.

Simply silent: No apps, no music

While the buds see full-blown upgrades, QuietOn has yet to add a sound set or bundled software with the hardware – meaning you can’t stream music over Bluetooth or use an in-house app to play loops. soothing background sound. Basically, these earbuds are ideal if all you want is silence… and are willing to pay for it.
