Qualcomm launches Snapdragon AR2 for AR glasses, audio platform, etc at company event

As the world searches for the next computing method, Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) unveiled the first augmented reality platform for glasses at the Snapdragon summit held in Hawaii, the Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1.

The new platform that Qualcomm (QCOM) says it’s capable of delivering “breakthrough” technology in “sleek, high-performance glasses,” using 50 percent less energy and 2.5 times the artificial intelligence performance of the platform. XR2 Gen 1, all done to help the glasses use less than 1 watt of electricity.

Qualcomm is headquartered in San Diego (QCOM) did not say when the platform would launch, but added that it is in “different stages of development” with a number of consumer technology companies, including Lenovo, LG, Sharp, Tencent (OTCPK:TCEHY) and others.

Conspicuous by its absence from the list is Apple (AAPL), It’s a widely believed to unveil augmented reality glasses aimed at the developer market, starting next year.

In a statement, Qualcomm (QCOM) note that the Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 uses a multi-chip architecture for better weight balance and reduced arm width on either side of the glass.

The platform distributes some data directly on the glasses and sends more complex data requests to smartphones, PCs or other devices.

by Microsoft (MSFT) Rubén Caballero, Corporate Vice President for Mixed Reality, Devices & Technology, added that the company has been “working closely” with Qualcomm (QCOM) to help create the foundation and “identify foundational, purpose-built technologies that open up new possibilities in AR experiences.”

Microsoft (MSFT), which already has a HoloLens headset on the market, is not listed among Qualcomm’s consumer technology partners.

In addition to the new augmented reality platform, Qualcomm (QCOM) demonstrated the Qualcomm S5 and S3 Gen 2 audio platforms to deliver a better audio experience on smartphones, as well as enhanced support for Microsoft (MSFT) Window 11.

On Tuesday, Qualcomm (QCOM) announced the new 2nd generation Snapdragon 8 platform for smartphones, powerful integration of artificial intelligence into mobile chipsets.
