MANILA, Philippines — Petro Gazz knocked Chery Tiggo out of the final, 25-15, 25-17, 25-13, and continued his title defense effort in the Volleyball League Enhanced Games. Premier in 2022 on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Angels relied on the trio of Lindsey Vander Weide, Myla Pablo and Aiza Maizo-Pontillas to improve the 1-1 record, forcing Creamline Cool Smashers into second seed.
Vander Weide hit the top 18 in the game, launching 14 strikes and 4 serves to eliminate Crossovers in just 80 minutes.
Pablo scored 15 points based on 11 pokes and 4 interceptions, while Pontillas scored 5 of the team’s 10 aces to finish with 11 points before playing another must-win with undefeated Cignal ( 2-0) on Tuesday at the Philsports Arena.
MJ Phillips bolstered Petro Gazz’s defense, taking four of her team’s blocks to finish with eight points.
“Today we are more focused on our mission. Because we need this win. But my players don’t play without pressure. They enjoyed the game and their roles were very clear,” Petro Gazz coach Rald Ricafort said in Filipino.
The Angels dominated the Crossovers in every set, especially in the third set, where they led 13, 22-9, behind Vander Weide’s three points in a row.
Mylene Paat was the only double-digit scorer for Chery Tiggo with 10 points and 7 digs, while Dindin Santiago-Manabat had 8 on import Jelena Cvijovic scored just one point playing in the first set.
The Crossovers, who remained undefeated in two games, managed to end the semifinals with a win over Cool Smashers as they would be relegated in the bronze game.
