MANILA, Philippines – The fit again Maddie Madayag attributes her stellar 2023 debut to coach Dante Alinsunurin’s trust and system in a 25-15, 25-20, 25 win -20 of Choco Mucho against Akari in Saturday’s All-Philippines Conference opener at Smart Arena Araneta.

Madayag, who suffered a left ACL injury last August 2021 during the Bacarra Balloon Open PVL Conference, shone in his first game and the whole game as he led with 11 points, hitting nine of them. Her 12 mutant attempts on a block and an ace.

The 5-foot 11-tall mid-blocker, who only played as a professional serving during her brief return to the Conference Strengthening, thanks their new coach for giving her the chance redeemed after more than a year of recovery.

“I didn’t think about it [Player of the Game]. Of course, I want to contribute to my team in any way possible [like] intercept and lead the group. POG is just a plus,” Madayag said in Filipino.

“That means the system Coach Dante wants us to put in place is working,” she added.

Madayag scored five of her 11 points in the final stretch of the third set to give Alinsunurin a winning debut.

Although she starred in their first game, Madayag said the team is still learning Alinsunurin’s system.

“I feel that we have not fully adapted to our new system. We still have a lot to learn and we can apply [ coach Dante’s teachings] more for ourselves. The best is yet to come,” she said.

Madayag said she feels fine after recovering from her second knee injury in the 2022 season and she hopes they can maintain their momentum to finally reach their goal of stepping on the PVL podium.

“Everyone is open to learning about our new system. Of course, it is in our interest. We’re glad we learned a lot and were able to apply it to this game,” she said.

Choco Mucho faces Petro Gazz, coached by former strategist Oliver Almadro, on Thursday at the FilOil EcoOIl Center in San Juan.
