MANILA, Philippines – Alyssa Valdez credits her teammates for “encouraging” her for returning from her eight-point Premier League Vol Football League (PVL) Invitationals debut.
After struggling in their four-set win over Petro Gazz, the three-time MVP of the tournament displayed his deadly offensive behavior, scoring 13 points as Creamline scans PLDT, 25-22, 25-16, 25-21, for Saturday’s second win in San Juan City.
Valdez’s attack was well-timed, hitting the 13/28 mark to make up for her early games.
“I am grateful to be with this team, they are very encouraging. After that first game, we trained and focused on improving. My coach and teammates really trust me (even having a bad game),” Valdez said in Filipino. “I also have to repay their trust by supporting them.”
Part of Valdez’s cheerleaders was Tots Carlos, who came out on top with 17 points, including shots on the PLDT.
The defending Open Conference MVP said the team’s trust starts with healthy competition in team activities, which drives them to do better in games.
“We are a competitive team. Not only against our opponents, but also within our team. We compete in a healthy way. Because all my teammates are determined to execute, attack and score,” Carlos said in Filipino. “Teamwork is our strength because everyone trusts each other.”
Although she was able to return to help Creamline win a second for solo second, Valdez said the Cool Smashers still have a lot of work to do as they will face a Cignal team undefeated, won three games in a row, next Thursday at Sta. Rosa, Laguna.
“We are very happy (with the win). But at the end of the day, we still made a lot of unnecessary mistakes that could have been minimized during the game,” she said. “Hopefully, we can improve it as the league and the season go on. We will focus on the next match. “
