‘Purple heart’ heals as Biden hates, divides

Getting noticed on Netflix isn’t easy.

The streaming giant throws millions into star-studded films like “Project Adam,” “Gray Man,” and “Red Notice.” That approach often burys smaller titles that lack A-list roles or brand recognition.

“Purple Hearts” defies that, standing tall against Netflix’s strongest originals.

The film follows the unlikely romance between a conservative US Marine (Nicholas Galitzine) and a progressive singer (Sofia Carson). The couple married to help Carson’s character buy diabetes medication, their differences dwindling as true love blossomed.

The series is currently the seventh most watched Netflix original. The Wrap reports the movie created 220 million hours watched in less than a month. That’s better than “The Irishman,” director Martin Scorsese’s hit 2019 film featuring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci.

The success of “Purple Hearts” says something profound about America in 2022. We may argue, and worse, on social media, but we crave a story that shows our differences. Ours wasn’t enough to stop the US test.

Now, compare that to the divisive allegation from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW.

President Joe Biden reneged on his unification pledge early in his presidency and he has grown more mature over time. He has declared unofficial war against Republicans in recent weeks, calling MAGA’s so-called Republicans “semi-fascists”.

The White House press arm confirms Biden’s tone.

Biden isn’t the only one to reject the “Purple Hearts” model.

The film received outrage from online progressives for humanizing the conservative soldier. They also decry the scene of a soldier offers a rudimentary toast in the presence of the main characters.

“This is life, love and hunting for some damn Arabs, baby!”

Undoubtedly, the line is offensive, but it shows the rough nature of the fighting mindset. It also tells how soldiers adjust their thinking to handle killing others on the battlefield.

It’s a sharp moment that emphasizes the character arcs going on.

The film was also skewed by professional critics. They gave the movie a 29% rated “rotten”while the general audience is much kinder (70% “fresh”).

Based on the 2017 novel by Tess Wakefield, “Purple Hearts” stands out in a crowded and often divisive market. Few films attempt to mend the rift separating the US states of Red and Blue.

Late night television has angry rhetoric and “clap hands” means alienating conservative viewers.

Projects that propose the human capacity to grow beyond hate include “The best enemy“”Green Book‘ and ‘ Skin ‘ was decried by critics.

Some cited the film’s healing nature in their reviews.

The team behind “Purple Hearts,” like the movie itself, took the highway rather than fending off critics. Director Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum focused on positive reaction to the movie but has acknowledged the criticism.

“I hope that people understand that in order for the characters to develop, they need to have flaws from the start. So we intentionally created two characters that were made to hate each other… They were flawed from the start and it was intentional. In order for the red heart and the blue heart to turn purple, you must have them. Some of the people they’re with are even more flawed than they are. “

“Purple Hearts” came about at an accidental time in American culture. Not only is the Commander-in-Chief at war with half the country, the leftists are demanding one-party rule across the country.

What other way to describe the outrage that “Euphoria” star Sydney Sweeney faces when it seems her family members are conservative?

Or consider how illegal protests against conservative Supreme Court justices were ignored by the Biden Justice Department.

The fascination for “Purple Hearts” is real and comforting, but it’s still just a movie.

In the real world, President Biden is about to double down on his MAGA-themed attacks in a speech about the “soul” of the nation. Meanwhile, his approval rating is dwindling. Just a few weeks ago, the major media fantasized about a 2024 Democratic-minus-Biden campaign.

Will his ratings drop the more he focuses on calling half the country “half-fascist,” or worse? Or will he realize that Americans can use more and less “Purple Hearts” partisan MAGA marketing test?

Maybe Biden should use one of his multi-day vacations to see “Purple Hearts” and jot down some notes. He should at least read the director’s comments. She is not the president, but she is not only dedicated to the unification of the country.

She does more about it than Biden. And it’s not even close.
