Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema dismissed reports of a liquidity crisis in the state, saying payments were delayed as the state was preparing for the revival of a special withdrawal facility towards Guide of the Reserve Bank of India’s Consolidated Repurchase Fund / Guarantee Fund. He said the state’s financial health has been maintained well and the treasury has issued more than Rs 3,400 crore.
The minister said there was a “problem in processing” as the state government recently decided to formalize 9,000 employees. “Punjab is the only state that has deposited Rs 2,000 crore into a consolidated sinking fund in the last 5 months,” he said.
Sukhchain Singh Khaira, convenor of Punjab UT Employees and Pensioners’ Common Front, complained that employees face problems due to delays in salary disbursement. “We have to pay EMI for loans and tuition by the first week of the month. Many employees had to take out loans to fulfill their commitments. The state government should deliver on its promise of financial prudence because of that government employees voted for them,” he said.
According to budget estimates, the state’s monthly salary bill amounted to Rs 2,597 crore and the end of GST compensation raised concerns in the AAP government as only Rs 4,000 crore was received as compensation. for the first quarter of this fiscal year. This is the first case in the current regime where wages have been delayed by six days.
Earlier in the day, answering questions regarding wages, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, who is in Hisar, said government employees will receive their wages in the evening. “We are disbursing not only the salary but also the pending fees of the sugarcane farmers. We have new hires. The collection of GST has increased and the revenue will be spent on the welfare of the people,” he said.
Rijiju tweeted: “Arvind Kejriwal wants to make India number 1 in the world but what did he do with Punjab within a year?” After a report in a newspaper said the Mann government was unable to pay employees in August, a move was made on the first of the month.
Rijiju also accused Kejriwal of squandering his earnings in the national capital on lavish expenditures.
Although the AAP and the Mann government have made big promises, they find themselves stymied by a resource crisis in Punjab that has been in the red for decades.
