Pulwama Widows’ Protest In Rajasthan New Flashpoint Between BJP, Congress

BJP workers were stopped by police today as they marched to the residence of Rajasthan CM.

Jaipur:

During a political ‘handle’ by Rajasthan Minister Ashok Gehlot during the ‘work for relatives’ controversy raging in Rajasthan, he refused to meet the widows of the protesting Pulwama soldiers, job requests for their loved ones. The minister, who tweeted asking if it would be better if the work was left to their children, met with other widows and discussed the matter with them. They have said that they would rather keep the work for the children. A day after Rajasthan police arrested BJP leader Kirodi Lal Meena, party employees held another protest in Jaipur today. Minister Ashok Gehlot accused Mr Meena of taking advantage of widows for political gain. In contrast, Mr Meena accused the police of “trying to kill him”.

The protests turned violent today as protesters were marching towards Mr. Gehlot’s residence.

While protesters threw stones and broke through police barricades, the police resorted to lathicharge.

Protests have lasted nearly two weeks, led by widows of soldiers killed in the Pulwama terror attacks in 2019 demanding jobs for the family and other issues. On Friday morning, police took the widows who were protesting outside the home of Deputy Minister Sachin Pilot in Jaipur and transferred them to hospitals near their respective residential areas.

Mr. Gehlot today met some of the widows of soldiers who were killed in previous campaigns. They told him that government jobs should only be given to their children. The widows of soldiers killed in the attack on Pulwama did not meet Mr. Gehlot.

The BJP criticized the state government, calling the move “an insult to widows” and accusing the government of failing to keep its promises to families.

Reacting to the police action, Mr Pilot told reporters in Tonk that the issue of widows should be listened to sensitively.

“Even today I believe that we can meet requests such as building roads, building houses and erecting statues. The message should not be conveyed that we are not willing to listen to the demands of the widows of the martyrs. If you agree with their problems or not, you also have to put your ego aside and listen to their requests,” the National Assembly leader said.

Widows have been protesting since February 28, demanding that the rules be changed so that their relatives, not just their children, can get government jobs on a compassionate basis. Their other requests include building roads and erecting statues of martyrs in their villages.
