All Things We’re Cooking is a series featuring family recipes from you, our readers and listeners, and the special stories behind them. We’ll continue to share more of your kitchen treasures throughout the holiday season.

Growing up in Louisville, Ky., Allison Stines loved Christmas Eve. It was the day when all her extended family would come to town and gather for a sumptuous dinner party hosted by her mother. Her mother will make a lot of food and cookies, including divinity, forgotten cookies, no-bake cookies, and Martian poop.

Martian poop gets its name from one of Stines’ older brothers, who associated the color from the Jell-O pudding mix with the fictional inhabitants of the planet Mars.

“We’re going to get the pistachio pudding, and it turns bright blue, like a Martian,” says Stines. “You know, they’re basically Martian poop… but we call them dung because that sounds a little better than calling them Martian dung.”

Despite the name, Stines promises that these are delicious, fancy pudding cookies — a family favorite that she loves so much to this day.

Stines, who still lives in Louisville, said: “They just remind me so much of family and being young and being able to spend time with family. “Now that we’re older, you know, my siblings have all moved except for my sister. And then my mother, she passed away in 2015.”

Stines said she tried to continue her mother’s lavish cookie-making business.

“It’s just something special. I think after my mother passed away… these traditions mean a lot more to me than they did before,” she said.

Today, Stines’ children were excited to see her take out the Bisquick mix and the pistachio pudding, she said. Appreciation for the poop of Mars has also extended beyond her family. Both she and her husband’s co-worker love cookies and they have become a staple on family holiday trips.

Stines and her family filled their house with lots of lights and about 40 inflatable lawn decorations before telling her friends to drop by.

“We distributed cookies… my mom’s famous Christmas cookies and other things she would make,” says Stines. “But people always ask, where are those Martian stools?”
