PS5 sales increased to 32 million, millions less than PS4 in the same time period

Sony released its latest earnings report this week, and it shows that PlayStation 5 sales have grown to over 32 million units, up from 30 million by the end of December.

Sony sold 7.1 million PS5 consoles most recently, up significantly from 3.9 million sold during the same period last year. The increase in sales was certainly partly due to the improved supply situation. In the future, Sony said it would be “much easier” to get a PS5.

For comparison, tPS4 has sold over 37 million units in the same time period since its launch, so the PS5 lags pretty far behind that older console. But of course, that can be partly explained by the inventory supply situation that affected the PS5 in the early days of launch.

In terms of game sales, Sony sold 86.5 million titles during this period, down from 92.7 million in the same three-month period last year. Out of 86.5 million games, Sony sold 20.8 million first-party titles on PS4 and PS5. 62% of games sold during this time period were digital.

PlayStation Plus had 46.4 million members this time around, down from 48 million in the same quarter last year. However, monthly active users increased from 111 million to 112 million, Sony said. Of those users, about 30% — or 33.6 million — have used a PS5, which shows just how big PS4 continues to be. Additionally, Sony says about 30% of PS5 monthly active users have never owned a PS4, Sony says this is a good result and shows that it is succeeding in bringing new people into the ecosystem. Sony also mentioned that players who switched from PS4 to PS5 recorded “significantly higher” gameplay time, average spend, and PS Plus subscription rates. As a result, Sony said it will “continue to focus on accelerating the transition of PS4 to PS5 users” to help make more money.

The company aims to sell 19 million PS5 units in the current financial year, so it has 6.2 million more to hit that milestone. Sony’s fiscal year ends on March 31.

“By optimizing our operations, we are doing our best to sell as many units as possible to meet strong demand,” said Sony.

Finally, Sony says the total gaming time of all PlayStation users during this period fell 3% year-over-year, although it grew 6% last quarter and up 14% month-over-month. 12 to November, Sony said: “We believe user engagement is on a recovery trend due to the entry of PS5 and the contribution of hit titles.
