Provocateur keeps his composure in Hutcheson Win

Provocateur finished first out of six in the first win of his career for the MyRacehorse and Spendthrift Farm partnership. Steady progress since debuting in career eight over a mile on grass at Belmont Park on October 10, he weakened to fourth after dueling through six plates on the road main race at the venue. Finding the winner’s circle on December 23 in Tampa Bay with a length of 4 and a half against the 4th and 5th favorites, his connections chose to try their ponies in Pasco S. 15th. January for the 3-year-old with first-time Lasix, and he was eliminated faster in the late lane, finishing second with 2 1/2 lengths.

Coming from a diuretic for this competition, the Provocateur came through an early bump after starting its journey from third place behind early leader Golden Juan and channel favorites Nitrous 1-2. First to attack at the far turn, Irad Ortiz Jr tied his opponent’s arm and it was a three-horse line at the beginning of the ramp. Kicking clear off the pacesetter, Provocateur and Nitrous Channel locked horns for the match to the wire and the former kicked clear in the final sixteenth game to win by two goals. It was Todd Pletcher’s eighth win in the race. “We were a bit confused about what he wanted to do early on. He didn’t train as promising as we had hoped. We think he’s going to improve a bit on the pitch,” Pletcher said in his post-race interview. “After that experience, he seems to have improved in his dirty training and has recently really resurfaced.”

Dam Cayala showed a fondness for Into Mischief when all 4 of her children ended up winning and 3 earning blacks including GIII Southwest S. One Liner winner. She has five winners from five races. Have a 2 year old child Flatter on record and the mare is expecting an Authentic’s pony this season.
