Proton VPN rolls out anti-censorship protocol for Windows along with other updates

Maker VPNProton has announced new features aimed at fighting censorship and protecting free speech around the world.

As David Peterson, CEO of Proton VPN, said in the release, “Authoritarian governments are increasingly using online technical measures to discourage or block VPN use. Some countries have even begun requiring citizens to hand over their smartphones for physical inspection.”

“Protecting free speech and fighting censorship is a core part of our mission, and we are committed to doing everything we can to help users around the world,” Peterson continued. “With today’s announcement, we hope to give people the tools they need to bypass censorship and access a free and fair internet, no matter where they are.”

Updates include:

  • New servers in 12 countries, some of which are at the bottom Freedom House Index And Democracy Index
  • A separate icon for Android users so they can customize the Proton VPN app icon and name to disguise themselves
  • InvisibleThe company’s anti-censorship protocol disguises VPN traffic as normal internet traffic, now working in Windows, making it nearly impossible to detect that someone is using a VPN

The announcement notes that Proton VPN subscriptions spiked 4,000% during Venezuela’s controversial presidential election. Similarly, the company saw a 3,500% spike in subscriptions in Bangladesh amid anti-government protests.

Due to this significant increase, Proton decided to launch servers in 12 new countries, making Proton one of the newest VPNs on the market. These new countries are Afghanistan, Bahrain, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Yemen.

As for the Stealth Protocol, it is designed to bypass sophisticated government censorship by using obfuscation techniques to make VPN traffic look like regular traffic. It has been available for Android, iOS, and MacOS. Thanks to this update, Stealth Protocol is now available for Windows users.

The Distinctive Icon feature makes it easy for Android users to hide the fact that Proton VPN is installed on their device.
