DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Iran’s foreign ministry said on Sunday it had summoned the British ambassador to protest what the country describes as a hostile atmosphere created by Farsi-language media outlets. State news agency IRNA reported that the ministry had also summoned Norway’s ambassador to Iran and strongly objected to recent statements by the Speaker of the Norwegian Parliament, Masud Gharahkhani.

The death of Mahsa Amini, 22, in custody after being detained by Iran’s ethics police has caused unrest across Iran’s provinces and the capital Tehran.

Protests over Amini’s death have spread across at least 46 cities, towns and villages in Iran. State television said at least 41 protesters and policemen have been killed since the protests began on September 17. Several official Associated Press reports by authorities show At least 13 people died, with more than 1,200 protesters arrested.

Clashes between protesters and security forces have continued. A member of the Basij, a volunteer force alongside the Iranian Guards, was killed by protesters last night in Tehran, the semi-official Fars news agency reported on Sunday. Another member of Basij, who had been in a coma since Thursday after a street clash, died in Urmia, West Azerbaijan province on Sunday, IRNA reported.

The website of Iran’s Foreign Ministry said it summoned Simon Shercliff, the UK’s ambassador to Iran, on Saturday and protested the organization of critical Farsi-language media outlets. The ministry accused news outlets of inciting chaos and spreading riots in Iran from the outset in their programs.

Iran said it considers the news agency’s reports to be interference in Iran’s internal affairs and acts against its sovereignty.

The crisis in Iran began when public outrage over the death of Amini, who was arrested by ethics police in Tehran for allegedly wearing a Muslim hijab too loosely. Police said she died of a heart attack and was not mistreated, but her family had doubts about it.

Amini’s death sparked harsh condemnation from Western countries and the United Nations, as well as solidarity protests abroad. On Sunday, violent street protests broke out outside the Iranian embassy in London, with stones thrown at police and five protesters arrested. Several police officers were injured in the skirmishes although nothing serious.

Pro-government protests were also held on Sunday in several cities across Iran. Thousands of people attended a rally in Enghelab, or the capital’s Revolution Square, waving Iranian flags. Several officials, including the cabinet spokesman, Ali Bahadori Jahromi, attended the rally in Tehran.
