Prosecutors investigating the 2020 death of Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona have asked the medical staff who treated him to be tried for negligent homicide.
In their request Wednesday, prosecutors said the “omission” and mismanagement of the eight medical professionals in charge of Maradona placed him in a “helpless situation” and left him alone. “for his fate” while hospitalized at home, according to court documents cited by the official Telam news agency.
Maradona died at the age of 50 in 2020 while recuperating Brain surgery to remove blood clotand after decades of battling alcohol and cocaine addiction.
Neurosurgeon and family doctor Leopoldo Luque and psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov are being investigated over his death as the main responsible for the former football star’s health.
Six others, including psychologist Carlos Diaz and medical coordinator Nancy Forlini, were also charged.
The prosecution charged them with “simple murder with dolus eventualis,” an offense where a person’s negligence while knowing their negligence could cause someone’s death.
They could face sentences ranging from eight to 25 years in prison.
According to prosecutors, the defendants “were the protagonists of an unprecedented, completely inadequate and reckless home-hospitalisation,” and allegedly committed “a series of improvisations, mismanagement, and mismanagement.” poor and flawed”.
The defense must now present his arguments and may request the dismissal of the case.
Maradona is considered by many to be one of the greatest players in history and led Argentina to win the 1986 World Cup.
