Proportion of militias forced to leave Boyo – Global issues

UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in CAR, known by its French abbreviation MINUSCA, launched an operation on Saturday to deport about 200 members of the armed group Unity for Peace in Central Africa (UPC) from Boyo, in Ouaka province.

According to MINUSCA, Battalions of Nepal and Mauritania have arrived to support the land efforts, forcing the UPC warriors to leave town.

They have taken over many houses, including the mayor’s mansion.

The delegation drew the attention of more than a dozen civilians killed on December 6 and 7 in Boyo, which also displaced nearly 1,500 people.

UN peacekeepers were able to intervene to protect civilians and continue to operate throughout the city with intense patrols.

MINUSCA has warned the UPC against any attempt to retake Boyo and reaffirmed its determination to ensure the protection of communities in accordance with its mandate.

Our reinforcements are ready and we are warning UPC elements against any return to the city.”, tweeted Mankeur Ndiaye, UN Special Representative to CAR and Head of MINUSCA.

Seleka vs Balaka

One of the poorest countries in the world, CAR fell into conflict in 2013 when then-President Francois Bozize was ousted by a rebel coalition known as the Seleka, which was largely a Muslim minority. .

The coup sparked a sectarian bloodbath between the Seleka and anti-Balaka forces, which were mainly composed of Christians and animists.

Last December, on the eve of the presidential election, the rebels launched a fresh offensive against the regime of President Faustin-Archange Touadera.

The president won his re-election and his army has now reclaimed the lost territory.
