2S1 Gvozdika is a self-propelled howitzer from the Soviet era based on the MT-LBu multi-purpose chassis, mounted with a 122 mm 2A18 howitzer. Gvosdika is compatible with all 122 mm ammunition developed for the D-30 howitzer. These include fragmentation, HE-FRAG, HEAT, cluster, smoke and illumination ammunition. A total of 40 rounds are taken, usually 35 HE-FRAG and 5 HEAT. The maximum range with HE-FRAG ammunition is 15.2 km.
The conflict, now in its eighth year, began when pro-Russian separatists seized part of the territory of the two regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine, shortly after Russia occupied Ukraine’s Crimea. The OSCE regularly claims evidence that Russia is sending troops and equipment to the fighting, an allegation Russia denies.
