According to sources, Chairman Naidu reached a broad understanding on the matter this morning during Chairman Naidu’s meetings with leaders of the opposition and relevant ministers.

Explaining that such naming and suspension is seen as a last resort to “maintain the credibility and dignity of the House of Commons”, he urged leaders of opposition parties to understand “the pain that the presiding officer will have to go through” before naming erroneous members. , sources said.

Ten leaders of the opposition met today with Mr Naidu over the matter of yesterday’s suspension of 19 members of the Rajya Sabha and their request for a discussion on the price hike.

Saying that the number of suspended members is high, they suggest that the suspension can be revoked in order to be able to have a good presence in the House. They also suggest that a specific date is indicated on which the price increase can be discussed. Some leaders felt that rescinding the unconditional suspension was appropriate, the sources said.

Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi, Leader of the House of Representatives Piyush Goyal and Minister (Parliamentary Affairs) Muraleedharan also attended the meeting.

Mr Naidu urged leaders to advise their respective party members not to disrupt the House proceedings.

He further noted that up to 19 members running into the Well of the House, shouting slogans and obstructing the House proceedings is a matter of concern and deserves action. “Especially so, after multiple appeals by Vice Chairman Shri Harivansh for not doing so was ignored,” he said, according to the sources.

He also pointed out that 63 members of the Lok Sabha were similarly suspended in 1989 and another 25 in 2015 for repeatedly violating House rules and causing trouble.

The chairman also met with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and inquired about her health and readiness to answer the debate over the price hike, the sources said.
