Pressure Boris to remove top aide ‘Party Marty’

A source said the Prime Minister knew he had to get rid of Martin Reynolds, the aide who emailed the Downing Street garden party. But for Boris Johnson, the dismissal would be like ‘shooting a beloved labrador’.

The Prime Minister’s own comments were revealed to the Daily Mail as Mr Reynolds, the most senior civil servant of the 10, is under growing pressure to step down because of the lockdown.

And last night it was reported that he had been involved in another drinking gathering in Downing Street.

He is said to have attended an event on December 18, 2020, where aides stayed late and drank.

This is the same night as the infamous Christmas party at press office No. 10. Now, the spotlight is burning on Mr. Reynolds, 52, dubbed ‘Party Marty’.

Mr Reynolds studied law at Cambridge University, where he listed interests including ‘orchestra and rock climbing’.

There he meets his wife Sarah, 51, with whom he has two teenage sons. While she became a chartered accountant, he worked as a consultant before joining the civil service in 1997.

After a stint in Brussels, he became the British deputy high commissioner in Pretoria, South Africa, from 2011 to 2014, and in 2019 was appointed ambassador to Libya.

Mr Johnson made comment on his reluctance to fire Mr Reynolds before party fury broke out, the source said.

The Prime Minister responded to concerns that his assistant was not ‘tough’ enough for the job. One source described him as ‘another agreeing man’. A spokesman for Mr Johnson denied that he had made comment on the labrador.
