Lucky Seven Stable’s Happy smile (Runhappy) is one of the possible candidates for Gulfstream’s GI Curlin Florida Derby April 2, according to coach Ken McPeek. Lucky Seven Stable also owns McPeek trained by McPeek Rattle N Roll (Connection), who is scheduled to premiere in 2022 at GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S. March 5 at Gulfstream. Smile Happy was expected to make its second appearance of the year at either the GI Toyota Blue Grass S. in Keeneland on April 9 or the GII Louisiana Derby at the Fair Grounds on March 26.
“You can see him in the Florida Derby,” said McPeek, who hosted Harlan’s Vacation to win the 2002 renewal. “I will try to keep him and Rattle separate because they have the same owner. You’ll see one in the Blue Grass and one in the Florida Derby after the Fountain of Youth. ”
Smile Happy and Rattle N Roll are both settled at Gulfstream. Smile Happy had a series of six workouts at Gulfstream ahead of a second-place attempt at GII Risen Star S. Feb. 19 at Fair Grounds.
“This is a really good horse,” says McPeek. “He ran well in New Orleans. I think he can get a little closer, but the pace just doesn’t suit him. He still showed real bravery to run late. This horse has a very bright future.”
Smile Happy won their first match at Keeneland on October 29, finishing on a starting pace to an easy 8 1/2 win. He returned to capture the GII Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs on November 27, defeating the Classic Causeway (Giant’s Causeway), who subsequently defeated GIII Sam F. Davis S. at Tampa and finished the in third place is White Abarrio (Race Day), the GIII Holy Bull S. winner at Gulfstream in their respective 2022 debuts.
