Porsche Vision 357 concept honors past glory

The German sports car brand of the Volkswagen Group, Porshe, has chosen to launch a new concept car that brings back the glory of the past. Dubbed the Porsche Vision 357 concept, the car pays tribute to the automaker’s first 356 model, introduced in June 1948. The automaker also claims that this is how OEMs celebrate 75 year of business. The Porsche Vision 357 concept has a style similar to the 356 but mixed with modern elements.

The Porsche Vision 357 concept is a refined sports car that honors the heritage of the 356.

As Porsche claims, the concept car is an attempt to bring together the past, present and future closely. The new concept template uses the original 356’s proportions and features futuristic styling elements. It appears sleek from all angles on the outside.

The concept car is painted two-tone with Ice Gray Metallic covering most of the exterior and Grivola Gray Metallic on the front bumper. The doors and hood are covered with large 75 decals, while subtle 357 stickers are on the front fenders and rear bumper. Its air intakes in the rear window have Air decals and arrows pointing to the air intakes. The sports exhaust gets a bluish titanium treatment with a ceramic interior.

This concept doesn’t have the usual door handles because the designers have hidden them in the rear glass. Instead of the traditional rearview mirror, the car is equipped with a camera. Porsche has also hidden the rear lights perforated in the body panels, while a third brake light is integrated into the rear grille motif. Surely this is a callback to the original Porsche 356. However, the Vision 357 has some design elements that are significantly different from the original 356. One of such styling features is the windshield.

Early Porsche 356s had a split windscreen with a bar in the middle, while the new concept didn’t have that. Instead, Porsche tried to make the glass look different by wrapping it around the black A-pillars to connect all three window elements into a single piece, like a helmet visor. The concept car rides on 20-inch magnesium wheels that have an aerodynamic advantage. In addition, the wheels come with carbon fiber axles in the corners.

Speaking of powertrains, the Porsche Vision 357 concept builds on the architecture of the 718 Cayman GT4 RS. This concept model is equipped with a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine capable of producing a maximum capacity of 493 horsepower. Porshe announced that they will design the mid-engine to accommodate synthetic fuel.
