Porsche is releasing a comprehensive dealer-installed update for its sporty Taycan EV that offers a significant increase in range, faster charging, updated infotainment features and more, CD driver reported. These changes are available free of charge to all Taycans ever produced (model 2020-2022), such as Porsche again shows the benefits of the software upgrade path slice by Tesla.
The biggest change is the improved performance, which adds up to 31 miles (50 km) of range on the WLTP cycle (slightly less in EPA-rated terms), a significant boost to the Taycan’s 200-mile EPA rating. (on the base 71.0-kWh model). Porsche has achieved that feat by reducing power to the front engine in Normal and Eco modes, while keeping the driver’s regenerative brake settings intact when switching drive modes. With the update, the first 2020 models will run as efficiently as the latest 2022 versions.
Porsche also optimized thermal management to allow the battery to charge longer at a maximum rate of 270 kilowatts. That will be especially helpful if you’re going for a higher charge, since before that the system slows down.
The other major change is the Taycan’s full-screen infotainment system. We love it in ours road test and found it easy to use, but others noticed lag in some operations. Porsche has now updated that to improve boot and response times, and make things even more powerful. It also modifies the head-up display and adds new integrations for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, allowing both to work wirelessly. Drivers can also search online for points of interest and filter out stations without the need for a fast charger.
Porsche also announced a number of additional hardware options for the 2023 Taycans, including a panoramic roof and hard wiring for the company’s optional Dashcam system. One downside to the update is that it essentially takes a day and you have to bring the EV to the dealer. However, Porsche says the update optimizes the Taycan’s control units, allowing EVs to accept more over-the-air (OTA) updates in the future. Owner will be contacted when it becomes available.
