Porsche’s latest 911 Carrera GTS only launched for the 2022 model year but an updated version has already been tested.
The update appears to be a mild one and could coincide with an update that was planned for the full 992 generation range, internally referred to as generation 992.2. Judging by the yellow warning labels on this latest prototype, a hybrid powertrain could also be planned for the updated GTS. Porsche CEO Oliver Blume confirmed in March that the electrification of the 911 would be coming. He said the combo setup will follow the line of 919 Hybrid LMP1 racing car, not a plug-in hybrid like the hypercar 918 Spyder. This means there will be no plugs and any electric motor generator(s) will be entirely used to assist the internal combustion engine and recover energy during braking.
The current GTS’s powertrain consists of a 3.0-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder making 473 hp and 420 lb-ft. It can be paired with a 7-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic.
Aside from any powertrain updates, tweaks to the rest of the car will be minimal. The prototype shows a new front-end design featuring a larger intake with operable vertical flaps.
While the prototype may look like previous testers for the updated version of the regular Carrera, the central locking wheel indicates it’s a GTS version.
We couldn’t spot the interior, but key among the expected updates will be a revised dashboard that sports a fully digital instrument cluster, similar to what we’ve seen. we see in Taycan.
For now, we expect the updated 911 lineup, including the GTS, to begin debuting next year as a 2024 model. Hold.
