In a shocking turn of events, filmmaker Kamaleshwar Mukhopadhyay and several other CPI(M) workers were arrested by Kolkata Police while they were holding a protest near Rashbehari intersection. It all started after an alleged attack on a bookstore run by the Left party. The critically acclaimed filmmaker and others were first brought to Lalbazar, but later in the evening they were released. The incident caused a storm on social media as the Tollywood film fraternity extended its support for Kamaleswar.

”Afraid of books???? Book??? There is not enough condemnation for the arrest of Dr. Kamaleswar Mukherjee. To you, Kamalda, for anything worthwhile”, filmmaker Srijit Mukherji wrote on Twitter.

Actor Abir Chatterjee wrote, “We love you Kamal Da and we are proud of you. With you…”

National Award-winning filmmaker Kaushik Ganguly also criticized Kamaleswar’s detention.

” Has this government lost its mind? The capture of Kamaleswar Mukherjee is EXTREMELY AWESOME. For what? For a bookstore? For supporting a protest against the looting of a ‘bookstore’? This is shameful. Strongly condemn this senseless and obnoxious act of muscle strength training. With you Kamleshwar Mukherjee we all need answers to this! ”, actor Ridhhi Sen wrote on Facebook.

Rajya Sabha MP Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya later announced that they had gathered at the Rashbehari intersection to protest the attack on a bookstore and that TMC supporters had closed it.

He also alleged that some loyalists to the ruling Trinamool Congress attacked them again during Monday’s protest. Several protesters, including filmmaker Mukhopadhyay and the chairman of the CPI(M) Kolkata district committee, Kallol Majumdar, were subsequently arrested by the police.

Meanwhile, Kamaleswar Mukhopadhyay after his release stated that the police had detained them and said that the protest could not be held at the busy intersection as it would stall the crowd movement of Durga Puja.
