Polestar 3 electric SUV to launch on October 12


Polestar’s first electric SUV will officially launch on October 12 with a 372-mile range target and optional Performance Package, Swedish company announced. Polestar 3 will launch with premium features like air suspension, active dampers and torque vectoring, putting it up against other EV SUVs like Mercedes-Benz EQS, Rivian R1S and Tesla Model X. Like those models, it will be built in the US at Volvo’s plant in Charleston, South Carolina.

The company, which is co-owned by Volvo and Chinese parent company Geely, has revealed a fair bit of information about the Polestar 3. The Polestar 3 will come with a rear-polarized dual-motor powertrain similar to the one above Polestar 2, with electric torque vectoring via a dual-clutch system on the rear engine. Cruise will be controlled by adaptive two-chamber air suspension and active dampers as standard, allowing the driver to switch between the comfort and dynamics of the firm suspension. Polestar says the dampers will adjust to road conditions “every two milliseconds”.

The optional Performance Package will deliver 510 hp and 671 pound-feet of torque (compared to the Model X’s 670 hp). It also includes Polestar Engineered chassis tuning for the active dampers and air suspension, along with interior details like gold seat belts.

Previously, the company said it was firing within 372 miles of the European WLTP cycle (so significantly less in EPA terms). It will also include a semi-autonomous driving system for highway driving, enabled by NVIDIA technology, and a lidar sensor – Volvo will likely use the same technology on the next-generation EX90 SUV set.
