What makes a good podcast? I’ve been pondering this question for the past few weeks since I asked the readers of The Morning to recommend their favorites.
To me, a good podcast is one that makes any drive too short, which makes a mid-seat flight bearable. A good podcast will take the brunt of the laundry or prepare dinner and turn waiting in line at the post office into something of a treat.
I’ll listen to any kind of podcast as long as it redirects – an interview, a historical recap, a true crime story, two best friends. I have a friend who won’t listen to any podcasts that don’t teach her something, another can’t stand the “ordinary people find themselves funny, snappy” style.
Readers submitted hundreds of suggestions, many of which I had never heard of. Alike “Back to the broken word, a podcast on addiction and recovery from Colorado Public Radio, which kept Wynn Jones of Mancos, Colo., on a cross-country trip. And “That’s what they say“On Language, which Steven Hunter of Chicago considers “possibly the most confusing podcast out there”.

Chocolate Cookies
Is it ever so bad to bake a batch of classic Jacques Torres cakes chocolate cookies? Even during the peak of summer, they’re the ideal chewy cookie, with chunks of bittersweet chocolate that create molten puddles in brown sugar powder and topped with crunchy sea salt. Mr. Torres likes to make the dough a day in advance so the flavors can blend. But I baked them right after mixing and they were almost delicious – still the best chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever made. I like to keep the balls of dough in the freezer, perfect for popping in the oven (or toaster) whenever I have a craving. If you don’t have both baking powder and bread dough on hand, you can just use the all-in-one; They’ll end up being a little less chewy but just as dark as chocolate-y.
