PM’s Dig At Gandhis Over Mallikarjun Kharge

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in Karnataka ahead of the parliamentary elections, accused the Gandhis of insulting one of the state’s highest leaders, Mallikarjun Kharge, who is currently head of Parliament. “I would like to remind everyone how much Congress hates Karnataka… insulting the leaders of the state is part of its long-standing culture,” Prime Minister Modi said in Belagavi, where he released the second wave. 13 worth more than Rs 16,000 crore to farmers.

Council elections will take place in Karnataka in May.

To Parliament, Mr Kharge is just a puppet – “for the sake of name” – the prime minister said, insisting that “everyone knows who holds the remote control”.

Declaring that “The National Assembly leadership belongs to a family that insulted the Kharge leader during the plenary session in Raipur”, Prime Minister Modi said, “Mallikarjun Kharge has served the public in every way possible… I am very disappointed to see that the top leader, the speaker of the National Assembly, has been looked down upon by them… The world knows who the remote control is.”

The congress recently held its plenary session in Raipur under the chairmanship of Mr. Kharge. But the session was not seen as a huge success as it should have been, with the party’s proposal to elect members of the Working Committee — the highest decision-making body in the National Assembly — rejected by the party.

It was reported that Rahul Gandhi did not support the election and the party steering committee authorized Mr Kharge to nominate members to the Working Committee.

Critics say it would be a big step for Kharge to maintain the party’s democratic credentials. Instead, he is overruled by Gandhians, who are still directing, critics say.

Mr Kharge was elected to the party’s top post last year – the first non-Gandhi leader to lead Parliament in more than two decades. His election, though supported by the Gandhis — raised expectations that the practice of electing leaders to internal bodies would also spread to the lower ranks.
