PM Narendra Modi’s Narmada Protest Jab At Rahul Gandhi
Rajkot:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today criticized Congressman Rahul Gandhi for marching with activist Medha Patkar during the party’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ over her campaign against the Narmada dam project, which he said was the lifeblood of the state.
Speaking at a rally in the Rajkot district of Gujarat ahead of the state elections, Prime Minister Modi said: “One sees a Parliament leader doing a padyatra with a woman who stalled the Narmada dam project for three decades.”
The Prime Minister said the project to build the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada River had been stalled for three decades because of legal hurdles created by activists, including Medha Patkar,.
He also accused Ms. Patkar of defaming Gujarat.
Prime Minister Modi said: “Ask Congress when asking for your vote that you are doing a padyatra by putting your hand on the shoulder of those who are against Narmada dam.
Mr. Gandhi joined Medha Patkar earlier this week for padyatra currently passing through Maharashtra.
BJP has criticized Medha Patkar’s campaign against Gujarat’s ‘Sardar Sarovar Dam’ which was inaugurated in 2017. Ms. Patkar led ‘Narmada Bachao Aandolan’, saying that the dam’s water would leave thousands of tribal families have to relocate.
On Saturday, party chairman JP Nadda said that Medha Patkar was “anti-Narmada, anti-Gujarat and anti-Saurashtra” who tried to stop the construction of the Narmada Dam and opposed the use of water for the people of Saurashtra.
“If people like that join Rahul Gandhi, it reflects his mentality,” Mr. Nadda said.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also attacked Mr. Gandhi, saying that the MP represents those who have refused to supply water to the Gujaratis.
Congress and Rahul Gandhi have time and again shown their hostility towards Gujarat and Gujaratis. By giving Medha Patkar a central place in his Yatra, Rahul Gandhi showed that he was on the side of those elements who had denied water to the Gujaratis for decades. Gujarat will not tolerate this. https://t.co/94jJBz4spP
